Date/time: Wednesday 24 February at 12.15-13.30
Session: B6: Tidal Resource Modelling: Understanding Technical Impacts
Presentation title: Field Measurement Validation of Linear Models for Wave-Current Interaction
Abstract: A linear model for flow kinematics under combined wave and current conditions is compared against field measurements from a UK tidal site data, recorded using Acoustic Doppler technology. The dataset contains simultaneous measurements of sea surface elevation and subsurface orbital velocities throughout the water column for a range of wave conditions and current speeds. The theoretical model for water particle kinematics is compared to the observed kinematics in terms of velocity spectra at a range of depths. This work will provide a better understanding of combined wave-current loading on tidal energy converters that will enable design optimization.
Speaker: Siobhan Vaughan, Research Engineer, DNV GL – Energy
Date/time: Wednesday 24 February at 14.45-16.00
Session: C7: Certification and Standards
Presentation title: The New Risk-Based Service Specification for Wave Energy Converters
Abstract: The development of standards and process of certification is fundamental to development of the wave industry . Unlike other energy sectors, wave energy converters (WECs) are at an early stage of development; they typically comprise new/unproven technology, limiting the applicability of existing Standards and the prescriptive Certification approach normally adopted. Extensions to WECs have therefore been overly conservative, "leading to unacceptably high costs and too lax handling of risk bearing technologies ." In order to overcome these shortcomings, DNV GL has developed a new - WEC specific - service specification. This paper describes the main new aspects and future developments planned.
We are pleased to announce that WaveDyn 1.2 is now available. WaveDyn is the indispensable wave energy modelling tool, allowing you to accurately analyse the performance of concept wave energy converters (WECs). With the recent advancements, WaveDyn is now also a powerful tool for the structural assessment of your machine. Users of WaveDyn 1.2 will benefit from a number of improvements and new features.
Please stop by stand 91 for a demonstration of WaveDyn’s advancements or to discuss how our advisory and certification products and services can enable you to realize your projects.
